About Product Atlas
Product Atlas covers storage and appliances for apartments where square footage is the binding constraint. It is written by Jackson Christopher, a Mechanical Engineering senior at UC Berkeley, out of several years of student housing and internship apartments — places with no closet, a shared kitchen, and a lease forbidding permanent modifications.
What qualifies this site to have an opinion
- Engineering, applied to furniture. A closet rod that sags, a shelf that bows under books, and a mini fridge that cannot hold temperature in a warm room are all load and thermal problems with published numbers behind them.
- Actual small-apartment constraints. Not a theoretical 500 sq ft. A real one, with the door that opens into the only place the shelf could go.
- Owner data at volume. Reports from r/malelivingspace, r/apartmentliving, r/smallapartments and r/organization are read in bulk, because the failure modes that matter show up in month eight, not in a review week.
Tested versus researched — the line this site does not cross
Most products written about here have not been personally owned, and pages say so. Where a product has genuinely been lived with, the page says that too, in first person, and names how long.
You will not find a claim of having personally tested twelve organizers over three years, because it would not be true. What you will find is stated sourcing: the specification document a number came from, the date it was checked, and where owner reports disagree with the manufacturer.
This rule is enforced by the build, not by good intentions — a page cannot use first-person testing language unless the product it names is recorded as owned.
How this site makes money
Affiliate links, disclosed above the first link on every page that has one. Nothing is recommended because it pays more; several of the most useful products covered here deliberately carry no affiliate link at all, because their price puts the purchase decision outside the window the affiliate programme actually pays on. The full policy is on the affiliate disclosure page.
Corrections
Specifications change and listings get swapped without notice. If a number here is wrong, say so — corrections are made in place, with the update date shown on the page.
